Advisor Charitable Match

Putting Local Artists Centre Stage

Johnston Group created the Advisor Charitable Match Program to team up with our advisors across the country who are supporting community initiatives that make a difference.

Bill Reid, Sharon Pollock, Brad Fraser… Canada boasts a long list of superstar artists. Theatre Network, at the Roxy, is here to add to that list and help Canadian artists share our nation’s stories with audiences in Edmonton and across the country.

Advisor Jason Desaulniers says donating to Theatre Network is fuelled, in part, by a bit of patriotism. “When we support Canadian artists, we’re supporting the people around us,” says Desaulniers. “And, they’re telling stories that reflect our own experiences, hopes, dreams, and even fears.”

For 50 seasons, Theatre Network, a not-for-profit professional theatre company, has helped emerging and professional artists create their work, whether it belongs on a canvas or a stage, and given them a prominent place to debut themselves.

The Roxy is one of the few theatres that still premieres new Canadian plays, and part of Theatre Network’s mission is bringing work from groundbreaking Canadian artists. Hosting theatre creators like Colleen Murphy and Ronnie Burkett and visual artists like Jason Carter and Chris Cran, has become a source of local pride, creating an accessible hub of culture in the community.

Desaulniers, who is the local advisor in Edmonton, AB, for Chambers Plan employee benefits, made a donation to Theatre Network, and Johnston Group, the plan’s administrator, was happy to match that contribution.

Desaulniers believes art is critical for sharing ideas. Theatre Network’s support lets artists take creative risks and confidently tackle tough topics, like racism or mental health struggles.

Along with paying staff wages and further developing the building, donations to Theatre Network are focused on funding playwright and artist commissions.

“It’s important to remind ourselves that superstar artists come from our own country, not just the U.S. or Europe.” says Desaulniers “There are local people doing great things around us.”
